Despite overwhelming evidence that the NAFTA model is a failure, there have been and remain numerous attempts to expand this model to more countries around the world.
NAFTA expansion agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea are still outstanding. In the past few years, NAFTA expansion agreements have been passed - by razor-thin margins and with numerous last-minute arm-twisting techniques - with Peru, Oman and five Central American countries and the Dominican Republic (collectively under CAFTA, the Central America Free Trade Agreement.
Currently in a coma for the past several years is the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), which was originally envisioned as NAFTA for the entire Western Hemisphere except Cuba, yet would have gone far beyond even NAFTA in its scope.
